Welcome!

To the best canoe club in the Hutt!

The Hutt Valley Canoe Club focuses on whitewater paddling with an emphasis on our gems of local rivers in the region. Regular trips are held on Te Awa Kairangi/Hutt River (both the Hutt Gorge and the section in Birchville), the Whakatīkei River, the Akatarawa River, and the Ōtaki River. We also travel across the North Island, heading to the releases from the various rivers that are hydro-controlled. During the summer, we often head to the South Island during the holiday season and paddle around the Buller region and the West Coast rivers as well.

Our members include both hardshell kayakers and packrafters. We run beginner trips as well as pool sessions for learners and experienced paddlers to brush up on rolling techniques, rescues and tricks! We have a good supply of kayaks and gear to use both at the pool and on river trips. We also have a fullsize raft, a couple of two-person ‘ducky’ inflatable kayaks and two packrafts for our members to hire.

Our members also run a predator trapping programme to bring native birds back to Te Awa Kairangi.

You can find out more about becoming a member here, and how to contact us here. Get in touch any time; new members are always welcome.

We run a beginners course each spring, once daylight saving has started. This is on Wednesday evenings (6 or 6.30pm start). We use our clubrooms and the section of the Hutt River near Birchville. The only cost is membership and weekly gear hire. We ask participants to commit to attending as many Wednesdays as you can (practice makes possible). See you on the water!
